Designing sound for I Can’t Escape: Darkness

The composer and sound designer of the game I Can’t Escape: Darkness, Chase Bethea, recently released a YouTube video on his channel about his process behind the sound effects and music of the game. I Can’t Escape is a horror/thriller game in which the player relies heavily on the sounds of the game for clues and directions; as a result, the sound effects are doubly important as they provide valuable information to the player.

In one part of the video, Chase describes his creative process behind the sounds of the cave the player journeys through, which involves items like a bat, a couple of bricks, and some loose stones mixed with substantial sound editing. Later on, he describes the process of mixing the score, and adding layers of retro and authentic instrumentation against each other.

I Can’t Escape: Darkness was released on September 17, 2015 by Fancy Fish Games. To see more of Bethea’s background in composition, see our recent interview.

About the Author

A native and lifelong Texan, I currently work in software education while contributing news, reviews, and interviews to VGMO on the side. I love the feeling that comes with the discovery of a brand new soundtrack, and always look forward to the next rekindling of that excitement. Outside of VGMO, I enjoy playing piano, listening to classical music and film scores, and trying to go unnoticed in any stealth RPG I can find.
