We are pleased to present the winners in the ‘Audio of the Year’ category of the Annual Game Music Awards 2017. These panel-voted, officially-recognised awards provide a thorough and wide-reaching recognition of achievement in game music over the last year. The panelists have selected their choices by carefully considering the merit of the game music created this year — as art and entertainment, as part of in-game experiences and as part of stand-alone albums. Congratulations to all winners, runners-up, and nominees.

Outstanding Achievement — In-Game Music

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Manaka Kataoka, Yasuaki Iwata, and Hajime Wakai took a surprising and unprecedented route when composing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The minimalist, piano-rich score playfully invokes themes from previous Zelda installments while cultivating a distinct musical identity, drawing players into this vast and mysterious iteration of Hyrule. -Emily McMillan

Runner-Up

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Other Nominations

Destiny 2
Divinity Original Sin 2
Super Mario Run

Outstanding Achievement — Main Theme

Aloy’s Theme (Horizon Zero Dawn)

While 2017 saw a lot of excellent new themes among its game soundtracks, “Aloy’s Theme” brings a winning combination of simplicity, memorability, and heart, while Julie Elven’s expressive vocals gives the melody its dynamic character. The theme clearly stuck with our team at VGMO, as the vote in this category was nearly unanimous. –Emily McMillan

Runner-Up

Divinity: Original Sin (Divinity: Original Sin II)

Other Nominations

ARMS Main Theme (ARMS)
Another Eden (Another Eden)
Nioh -Main Theme- (Nioh)

Outstanding Achievement — Vocal Theme

The main vocal theme for NieR: Automata, with its different versions to capture the perspective of each playable character, helped to bring a sense of humanity to the cast and stunned with its beautiful melody, culminating in the final credits by incorporating all of the singers and even the development staff to cheer the player on against all odds! -Don Kotowski

Runners-Up

Jump Up, Super Star! – Super Mario Odyssey

Other Nominations

About the Author

A native and lifelong Texan, I currently work in software education while contributing news, reviews, and interviews to VGMO on the side. I love the feeling that comes with the discovery of a brand new soundtrack, and always look forward to the next rekindling of that excitement. Outside of VGMO, I enjoy playing piano, listening to classical music and film scores, and trying to go unnoticed in any stealth RPG I can find.
