Austin Wintory releases an eclectic diegetic soundtrack for Sunset

Austin Wintory, the multi-AGMA winner behind scores such as Journey, The Banner Saga, and Horn, has released his latest game soundtrack. The Sunset Original Soundtrack features 28 tracks from Sunset, a Kickstarted adventure game set in South America in 1972.

Recorded with the help of numerous co-composers, arrangers, and performers, the final soundtrack is an extremely eclectic one incorporating everything from guitar-based anthems to traditional songs to even a full requiem sequence. Wintory said the following about the music:

“I can honestly say I have never worked on a soundtrack quite like SUNSET. Michael and Auriea, the fantastic collaborators who make up Tale of Tales, gave me a particularly intriguing challenge: construct a score to fit this introspective tale of an American activist / house cleaner in early 1970’s South America, within a nation coming apart at its seams. Where I ended up in addressing that challenge was to make the music part of the world itself: an entirely diagetic ‘score’ found within the various vinyl records, reel-to-reel tapes and record broadcasts Angela can discover in the game. I’ll say no more.”

2015 promises to be a massive year for Wintory. In addition to his three already-released projects (SUNSET, The Order: 1886, Saints Row: Gat out of Hell), the artist is wrapping up work on no less than five indie games: ABZU, Lead to Fire, Luna, Gorogoa, and The Banner Saga 2. Sunset‘s soundtrack is available for 5 USD from Bandcamp now.
